Having the right stats/rolls is the single most important thing. The goal firstly is to find non-Ancients with the right rolls for your build, then find Ancients or Primals with the right rolls and augment them. And yes, you can waste gems augmenting a bad Ancient which gets replaced later.Īn Ancient pair of gloves with, say, Vitality is probably worse than an identical non-Ancient that has the Crit Chance instead. So you have to get a bit lucky to find good Ancients and Primals. Most gear you find will not be optimal you'll have incorrect rolls.
If the specific stats on the item are wrong, the Ancient can be worse. However, it is still possible for a Primal to be worse than an Ancient or an Ancient to be worse than a normal legendary. A Primal is an Ancient which is gusseted to have max stats. Ancients both can be augmented and have higher stats than non-Ancients.
